Chora is the capital of Andros Cyclades. Located on the eastern side of the island, Chora is found at a distance of about 40 km from Gavrio, the main port of Andros. This is a lovely place to walk around, through paved paths, flowered yards and elegant mansions. As Andros was rich until the middle 20th century due to marine trade, Chora has many mansions that used to belong to captains and ship owners.
The past wealth of the locals brought a sense of culture to the island, evident until today. The Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art in Chora Andros is considered among the best art museums in Greece. Every summer, this museum hosts different art exhibitions and attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. The Kairis Library is also very interesting and organizes Ploes Cultural Festival every summer, giving a special vibe to the island.
Due to its geographical location, Chora of Andros gets very windy in summer, with strong summer winds called meltemia that come from the north. A very interesting spot is the Church of Panagia Thalassini, constructed on a rocky promontory in the sea and dedicated to Virgin Mary of the Sea. On the highest spot of Chora is the Square of the Unknown Sailor, offering fantastic view to the Aegean. At this square is the Archaeological Museum of Andros, hosting findings from various excavations on the island.
On a rock in the middle of the sea, just off Chora, is an impressive lighthouse, constructed in the 19th century and working until today. This lighthouse is often used as the symbol of the island.
