Discover Chora in Serifos

View from the hill top above Chora, the capital of Serifos

At a distance of only 5 km from Livadi, the main port of Serifos Cyclades, is Chora. This is the main village and capital of the island, constructed on the slopes of a hill, at an altitude of 230m. Chora Serifos distinguishes for the traditional Cycladic architecture and has two main quarters: Ano (Upper) Chora and Kato (Bottom) Chora, while on top of the hill is Kastro, the ruined castle that the Venetians constructed in 1430 to protect the island from enemy attacks.

To get on top of this ruined castle, where is the chapel of Saint Constantine (Agios Konstantinos), visitors will need to climb up some stairs but the view is totally rewarding, especially during sunrise. A bit lower than the chapel of Saint Constantine are the church of Agia Varvara, the church of Jesus Christ and the church of Agios Ioannis Theologos, carved on a rock. This location on top of the hill offers breathtaking view to the Aegean Sea and the close islands of Cyclades.

After the Greek Revolution of 1821, the small settlement of Kastro gradually started to develop and the quarter of Ano Chora was created. This quarter is spread around the square of Ano Piazza, with cozy labyrinth streets and white-washed houses. Ano Piazza is the most popular spot in Chora, Serifos island, with the Neoclassical Town Hall building dating from 1908 and the Cathedral of Agios Athanassios next to it.

Few meters lower than Ano Piazza is the Square of the Mills with three traditional windmills and the small Archaeological Collection of Serifos. In summer, this quarter of Ano Chora bursts with life with traditional taverns, cafeterias, bars and shops.

Kato Chora is the lowest quarter of the town, with the Church of Evangelistria dominating the main square. In this quarter, the paths are slightly broader. There is an interesting Folklore Museum in this settlement as well as a small open theatre where the annual Festival of Serifos and other cultural events take place in summer nights.
