On the south eastern side of Kefalonia island is the tourist village of Skala. With controllable tourist development, Skala is among the most convenient places to stay during holidays in Kefalonia. The modern village of Skala is constructed just above the beach and has all kind of tourist conveniences, from Kefalonia hotels and apartments to shops, mini-markets, restaurants, bars, medical centre, tourist agencies and others.
The Old Town of Skala is constructed at the slopes of a hill above the modern town. Due to the strong earthquake of 1953, the Old Town was largely damaged and residents rebuilt their homes few meters further, just above the sea. A walk to this Old Town is recommended to see the ruined houses, have dinner and enjoy the sea view. On the one edge of Skala, there is an ancient Roman Villa with impressive floor mosaics.
The beach of Skala is extremely large and extends for about 3 km. Due to its large size, it has all types of shores, from soft sand to pebbles. Some parts are organized with sun beds and umbrellas, while other parts are more secluded and great for privacy. Close to Skala is also the fishing village of Katelios with an organized beach and tourist facilities.
In general, Skala is a convenient place to stay in Kefalonia, particularly for families with kids that need to be close to beach and services, like shops or doctors. Skala is located 37 km from Argostoli and the airport (about 1 hour drive) and 12 km from Poros, the main port of Kefalonia. On the road connecting Skala to Poros, there are fantastic villas with private pools.
