Best beaches and villages in Ithaca

A tiny island in the Ionian Sea, Ithaca is famous all over the world as the homeland of Ulysses, the legendary hero of Homer. Today Ithaca is a fantastic place for relaxing holidays, with small traditional villages and stunning beaches with blue green waters. Apart from cozy villages, there are also wonderful beaches in Ithaca. Filiatro and Sarakiniko, two small coves close to Vathy, are the most organized Ithaca beaches. However, there are many other small coves with stunning waters around the island that constitute ideal places for a relaxing swim in total privacy. Vathy (or Vathi) is the capital town of Ithaca island, in the Ionian Sea. This town spreads around a large natural bay and distinguishes for its traditional architecture with the small houses, the red-tiled roofs and the Venetian mansions. The severe earthquake that hit the region in 1953 destroyed many houses and buildings in Vathy but fortunately many of these houses were rebuilt in traditional style and the historical mansions were restored. Kioni is probably the most picturesque village in Ithaca Greece. This seaside village is surrounded by lush greenery and the waters have a fantastic blue green colour. The small port of Kioni is lined up with few fish taverns and cafeterias. Many excursion boats from Kefalonia and Lefkada arrive in Kioni, on the northern side of Ithaca, and allow visitors to see at least part of the beauty of Ithaca. Fantastic blue green water in Filiatro beach, Ithaca island
Filiatro is among the most beautiful beaches in Ithaca island, Greece. Located only 5 km from Vathy, the capital of Ithaca, Filiatro is a small bay with stunning blue green waters. This is probably the best organized beach on the island, with sun beds, umbrellas and a restaurant-cafeteria on the shore. Small rocks and much greenery surround the beach of Filiatro, which is actually close to another popular beach, Sarakiniko. A narrow and windy road from Vathy leads to both these beaches. There is no bus going to Filiatro and visitors will need to have or rent a private means of transport.
Sarakiniko is a pebbed beach with lovely waters, located on the southern side of Ithaca Ionian. Sarakiniko Beach actually consists of two small bays, both relaxing and non-organized with sun lounges or umbrellas. Both bays of Sarakiniko have olive trees that almost reach the sea and offer natural shade to visitors. Frikes is a small seaside village on the northern side of Ithaca island. This village is actually a port and in summer there are ferries to Frikes Ithaca from Vassiliki port in Lefkada. This small place is surrounded by lush greenery and has three ruined windmills on the slopes of a hill above the port. Some Ithaca villas and pool hotels are found around Frikes, offering a secluded environment for your holidays. A couple of small bays to swim are found close to Frikes and there are few fish taverns at the port.
Stavros is the second largest village of Ithaca, located on the northern side of the island. At a distance of 16 km from Vathy, the capital town of Ithaca, Stavros was founded in the 16th century by inhabitants of close villages. Agios Ioannis is a large but narrow beach located on the western side of Ithaca island, Greece. Accessible through a narrow street from the village of Stavros, Agios Ioannis Beach is not organized with sun loungers and umbrellas and there are no taverns or beach bars there. This is a large pebbled beach with fantastic waters to swim. Opposite of Agios Ioannis Beach are the coasts of Kefalonia island. This is a perfectly unspoilt beach and if you go there in low season, there is high chance that you are totally alone.
Gidaki is probably the most beautiful beach of Ithaca, Greece. Located on the north eastern side of the island, Gidaki is a large bay with fantastic exotic waters, crystal water and green surroundings. There is no road to this beach and visitors can go there only by boat from the port of Vathy or by foot. There is a hiking path to Gidaki and visitors will need about 30-40 minutes to get there from Vathy.
